Roof Insulation: Make your home weather resistant

Roof Insulation: Make Your Home Weather Resistant

The main purpose of roof insulation is to provide weather resistance, an important requirement for homes as it protects them from the dangers of humidity and extreme temperature conditions. Roof insulation products are usually available from insulation contractors and suppliers.

Materials

Asbestos was previously used for roof insulation. However, asbestos is no longer in use due to its harmful properties, and other materials have taken its place, including rock wool, glass wool, sheep wool, cellulose and polyester. Most roof insulation materials made from synthetic mineral fibers and foam insulation are also used on a roof's underside. Roof insulation materials are usually available in batt, blanket or loose-fill form, and may either be installed from the outside or inside of the house.

Methods

The homeowner and the insulation contractor usually decide on roof insulation placement. If placed on the exterior, reflective foil will be used. If placed on the underside of a roof, it is installed through the house's interior. Take note that some obstacles to this method might include electrical wiring, vents and other fixtures. As a solution for this, spray foam insulation may be used. Some types of spray foam insulation applied to the underside of the roof binds the tiles and slates to create an effective weatherproof barrier against rain, wind, snow and dust.

Some Precautions

Some general precautionary measures should be taken during the installation of roof insulation, as it involves chemicals and other materials that could cause skin or health problems. Professional contractors or engineers hired to do the job are usually equipped with masks, gloves and appropriate protective gear, so it is highly recommended for anyone not involved with the actual installation to stay away from the work area.

The area should also be thoroughly cleaned with a vacuum cleaner to remove surface dust, while at the same time checking if there is adequate ventilation to maintain air quality inside in the house. In addition, there is always the possibility of loose-fill or inferior types of insulation going through exhaust fans, ceiling vents or even light fixtures, so the insulation should be of superior quality.
